Periodic urine drug screens allow physicians to confirm patients are using prescribed medication in their Chronic Opioid Therapy (COT) plan of care.
In the Journal of Pain, Clinical Guidelines state “in order to prevent aberrant drug related behaviors clinicians should consider periodically obtaining urine drug screens or other information to confirm adherence to the COT plan of care.”
Prescribing physicians can provide excellent patient care and protect themselves in the process by reviewing drug screens for inconsistencies.
University Services reviews these urine drug screens for any inconsistencies based on the medication list provided by the patient. Inconsistencies with results and comments are reported to the prescribing physician.
From our own data of over 1 million results, we have found 56% of drug screens are inconsistent, and the most common comment accompanying results is “Medication listed not found in urine.”
