Propoxyphene

Definition
Propoxyphene is a mild narcotic analgesic that is less potent than codeine. It bears a close structural relationship to Methadone. It is widely prescribed in the U.S. for the relief of mild to moderate pain.

Trade Names
Darvocet, Darvon, Wygesic

Usage
Propoxyphene is available in pill form and is commonly combined with Tylenol or Aspirin.

Effects
A propoxyphene overdose can result in cardiac arrhythmias, circulatory collapse, coma, convulsions, low blood pressure, pulmonary edema, respiratory depression, and stupor.

Detection
Propoxyphene and its major metabolite norpropoxyphene can be reliably detected in urine.

Law
Propoxyphene is a controlled substance in the United States and is only available by a doctor’s prescription.
