Mescaline

Definition
Mescaline is a hallucinogenic alkaloid that is isolated from the peyote cactus of northern Mexico. It is closely related to synthetic amphetamines and methamphetamines.

Usage
Mescaline is used by certain Indian tribes to produce psychedelic experiences during religious rituals. The drug is infrequently found in illicit drug trade.

Effects
Adverse effects include abdominal cramps, anxiety, diarrhea, hallucinations, sweating, tremors and visual distortions.

Detection
Mescaline can be detected in plasma and urine.

Law
Peyote is a Schedule I, hallucinogen, and its use is punishable by law. Certain states have made exceptions for use by Native Americans if it is used as part of a religious ceremony.
